What is the S.E.A Lab?

The S.E.A Lab is the latest addition to Southern Encounter Aquarium & Kiwi House's Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) education programme, supported by the Ministry of Education. Our on-site, registered teacher provides laboratory investigations for students ranging from Year 5 to Year 13.

Students time is split evenly between observation of the many wonderful animals on display in the Aquarium and the unique opportunities presented for detailed examination and investigation in our Laboratory.

Both the Aquarium and Laboratory learning experiences are facilitated by qualified, knowledgeable educators to ensure students get the most from their visit and that their experiences address the desired learning outcomes.

Popular study areas include abiotic factors, classification, form and function and biological rhythms.

The education programmes are designed to meet the Achievement Objectives of Science, Biology and Technology Curricula but programmes can also be developed to fulfil your requirements in other curriculum areas.

Sponsors

The provision of the SEA Lab facility has been made possible through generous contributions from community organisations. We would like to thank and acknowledge the generosity of:

Canterbury Community Grants Board
Brian Mason Scientific and Technical Trust

Costs

Entrance costs for school groups are slightly higher than SEA School programmes to assist in recovering costs but students are provided with much more detailed studies in their selected programme area and, of course, prices include Aquarium admission:

Year 5 Year 10:

$5.00

Year 11 to Year 13:

$7.00

ONE adult per ten children:

FREE

Additional adults:

$11.00

Times

Bookings can be made for 9.00am or 12.00pm to fit within school hours but these times can be changed if necessary. Ideally education programmes in SEA Lab are of at least 2 hours duration but they can be customised to any duration to suit your requirements.

Bookings are essential and we recommend you book in with our Educator as early as possible to ensure your preferred date is available.

Student Numbers

There is a limit of 40 students participating in a SEA Lab programme due to laboratory limitations of equipment and access.
