What is What?

Living World
Level 3/4: Life Processes

Though they look very, very different most animals have strikingly similar parts on their insides that perform similar functions.

Courageous Corals

Living World
Level 3/4: Ecology
                 Evolution 1
Level 5:    Life Processes 2

A special programme developed to allow students to explore the variety and diversity of coral species and the life that thrives around them. A large selection of dead corals are provided.

Life on the Rocks

Living World
Level 3/4: Ecology
                 Evolution 1
Level 5:    Life Processes 2

Investigate the environment of the rocky shore and examine common rocky shore species to see how their special features enable them to survive this harsh and variable environment.

Phantastic Phyla

Living World
Level 3/4: Evolution 1
Level 5:    Life Processes 2

Investigate live specimens of a variety of animals to determine what makes them similar or different. Then use a simple key to classify a wider range of organisms in the Aquarium.

Tooth to Tail

Living World
Level 5:     Life Processes 2

Life in the worlds waters requires some special adaptations, even just to breathe. Examine a variety of these animals and explore the concepts that help them survive.

Biological Filtration

Living World
Level 5:    Ecology
Level 6:    Life Processes

We normally associated microorganisms with disease but here at the Aquarium EVERY animals very life depends on their presence and continued good health.

Living Processes

Living World
Level 6:    Life Processes

Investigate the factors that influence the growth and development of the famous Sea Monkeys: Artemia

Reproduction

Biology
Level 6: AO 2

Aquatic species have evolved some truly amazing strategies for reproductive success. Students will spawn, fertilise and develop a marine creature as they investigate.

Classification

Biology
Level 7: AO 1bp

Investigate live specimens of a wide variety of animals to determine the characteristics of several phyla. Then use this information to classify a wider range of organisms in the Aquarium.

Gas Exchange

Biology
Level 7: AO 1b

How do aquatic animals breathe? How does the water flow? What is “counter current flow” and why do fish need it? What influences respiration rates? Programe also draws comparisons to control of body temperature.

Abiotic Factors

Biology
Level 7: AO 1a

How do aquatic environments differ? What does this mean for the animals that inhabit them? Investigates aquatic species and the characteristics of their environment such as light, pH and salt concentrations.

Animal Studies

Biology
Level 8: AO 1a, 1b

Use the equipment provided in S.E.A Lab to design and implement an investigation into an animal’s behaviour. Use sophisticated data-logging equipment to monitor responses long term and record data for subsequent analysis.

Mighty Materials 1

Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Level 2: AO 1, 2, 3, 4
Level 3: AO 1, 2, 3, 4

An Aquarium has some very specific requirements that must be met in order to function well. What are the properties of these different materials and how do they relate to their use?

Animal Environments

Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Level 3: AO 1, 2, 3, 4

The Aquarium contains many examples of environments and operational systems designed or designated for particular animals. Investigate the needs of specific animals in order to identify opportunities for technological activities.

Mighty Materials 2

Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Level 3: AO 1, 2, 3, 4
Level 4: AO 1, 2, 3, 4

As in Mighty Materials 1 we examine materials and their properties and how this correlates to their function in the Aquarium. Magic Materials 2 looks at these materials at greater depth and introduces more complex concepts.

Tools of the Trade

Technological Knowledge and Understanding
Level 4: AO 1, 2, 3, 4
Level 5: AO 1, 2, 3, 4

From studying animals in the wild to keeping them alive in captivity we rely on a huge range of technology. See what we use and why!
