What Do Southern Encounter Aquarium & Kiwi House Volunteers Do?

The Southern Encounter Aquarium & Kiwi House has an established Volunteer Programme which is designed to aid in the smooth operation of the Aquarium and help visitors enjoy and appreciate the true beauty of New Zealand’s aquatic biodiversity and fauna.

Volunteers must be over 25 years old and have good command of the English language.

-----------------------------------

Volunteer Duties:

  • Provide guided tours of Southern Encounter as required, speaking to groups and individuals. Guides are also encouraged to point out interesting shy creatures which would not normally be seen.
  • Enhance visitor enjoyment by encouraging interaction and education.
  • Provide accurate information about the many aquatic species on display to visitors and answer questions.
  • Assist with public fish and animal feeds.
  • Assist with the cleaning and general care of the signs, graphics and displays at Southern Encounter Aquarium & Kiwi House.
  • Promote Southern Encounter, our conservation objectives and local region, in a positive way.
  • Commit to continually develop guiding and interpretation skills appropriate to your guiding level.
  • Assist with other duties as required.
  • Volunteers should undertake all duties in a professional, competent, safe, non-discriminatory and efficient manner.

Your Commitment

New Volunteers undergo a training course which will equip them with the knowledge and skills to become Southern Encounter Guides. The training is thorough and is undertaken at a pace to suit each individual. On-going training is also provided.

Once trained a Volunteer must undertake to work two days per month, although many Volunteers choose to work one or more days per week. There is a roster system so Volunteers can indicate which days they are able to help at Southern Encounter.

The Volunteer Programme is a wonderful way to meet new people with common conservation interests.
